donated £5000 towards our lighting appeal. we are pleased to say that with this very generous donation, we’ve raised £15,000 since we launched the appeal in autumn 2017, towards the our original hospital dating back to 1879. it is home to the normansfield theatre , the langdon down museum of learning disability , the national office of the down’s syndrome association and down syndrome international . we are on the border of teddington and hampton wick and are owned and managed by the down’s syndrome association. dr john langdon down was a victorian physician who established normansfield in 1868 as a family home and a place where people with learning disabilities could be cared for and educated at a time when most of them would have been condemned to life in an asylum. this remarkable man and his family had a revolutionary and enlightened approach to the care of people with learning disabilities. they built this beautiful theatre (entertainment hall) and encouraged their patients/students to learn music and drama as part of their education. normansfield theatre normansfield theatre is a hidden gem, and considered to be one of the most important private theatres in the country. home to the largest collection of restored victorian scenery, we are also one of only two theatres in the country with the original scene changing system in place. see the history of normansfield theatre here . in 2015 we received a heritage lottery grant for £85,100 for the project – normansfield – protecting a theatrical past . today, we have a wide range of performances from operas, musical and choral concerts, to drama productions. our programme is listed in forthcoming events . langdon down museum of learning disability the museum includes displays about the work of dr john langdon down and the history of normansfield from 1868 to 1997. also on display are objects from the royal earlswood asylum and artefacts made by james henry pullen (1835–1916), a savant known as
